REPORTS TO: Hope Haven Director
POSITION SUMMARY
The Assistant Director acts directly under the guidance and direction of the Director to support the mission and daily operations of Hope Haven, a ministry dedicated to providing meaningful engagement for members living with brain changes, such as early to mid-stage dementia. Serving as key support to the Director, and assuming full operational leadership in the Director’s absence, this role balances hands-on engagement, volunteer mentorship, and administrative assistance to foster a safe, joyful, and Christ-centered social environment.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Program Operations: Collaborate with the Director, committee members, and church staff to ensure Hope Haven's policies, procedures, and standards are consistently followed.
- Member Engagement: Remain on-site for each 4 hour respite session, assisting the Director to ensure maximum safety, dignity, and enjoyment for all members and volunteers. Cultivate a warm, inclusive atmosphere that promotes participation and deepens friendships.
- Activity Implementation: Lead and adapt group activities, such as crafts and trivia, to meet varying cognitive levels while maintaining high engagement.
- Caregiver Support: Build trust and rapport with family members and caregivers, serving as a compassionate and supportive point of contact.
- Volunteer Coordination: Delegate responsibilities effectively to maximize volunteers' unique talents, abilities, and interests. Assist with the scheduling of volunteers, musicians, and speakers.
- Administrative Duties: Maintain an ongoing awareness of member, volunteer, and program needs. Ensure all storage and work areas are kept neat and organized.
- Community Outreach: Represent and promote Hope Haven within the broader community to foster positive public awareness and expand our network of support.
- Professional Conduct: Strictly maintain the confidentiality of all members, families, and volunteers. Exhibit a positive, professional, enthusiastic, and encouraging attitude at all times.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Leadership: Capability and readiness to confidently lead the program in the Director's absence, including overseeing daily operations, directing volunteers, and addressing unexpected situations with sound judgment.
- Experience & Passion: Genuine interest and passion for serving adults living with brain changes. Demonstrate patience, empathy, and a willingness to learn how cognitive changes affect communication, behavior, and participation.
- Interpersonal Skills: Exceptional communication skills, characterized by compassionate listening, emotional resilience, and a supportive demeanor. Ability to work cohesively as part of a team.
- Safety & Awareness: High vigilance of surroundings to ensure the safety and security of members.
- Technical Skills: Proficient in Google Docs & Google Drive. Ability to learn and utilize other software programs as needed including Constant Contact, Canva, and Volgistics.
- Continuous Learning: Eagerness to learn more about dementia and other cognitive disorders, along with a willingness to obtain CPR and First Aid certification upon hire.
- Adaptability: Flexibility to seamlessly manage unexpected situations, navigate interpersonal dynamics with tact, and calmly redirect, reassure, or adapt communication when individuals experience confusion, frustration, or resistance, ensuring a joyful, uninterrupted program flow.
- Physical Ability: Physical stamina to stand, walk, and engage with participants for 4+ hours per day; ability to lift and carry up to 25 lbs; and the physical capability to comfortably bend, reach, and assist with active group programming.
- Mission Alignment: Fully supportive of the faith-based nature of the ministry.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Relevant Experience: Background in healthcare, senior care, therapy support, social work, or recreation with experience supporting older adults. Ability to recognize subtle changes in member conditions, provide attentive supervision while gently guiding and escorting members safely between activity spaces.
- Emergency Preparedness: Confidence to act quickly and calmly during immediate needs or medical emergencies, including First Aid, choking response, and AED use.
SCHEDULE & COMPENSTATION
- Hours: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8:30 AM–4:30 PM (may vary slightly). The Assistant Director is expected to be present before and after the four-hour respite session for preparation, setup, cleanup, administrative tasks, and volunteer coordination.
- Compensation: $20.00 per hour
- Current (2 Days/Week): $320 per week ($16,640 annually).
- Potential (3 Days/Week): $400 per week ($20,800 annually).
- Growth Potential: Role has the potential to expand as the programs grows.
